I found this link on your message board:

I used to always visit their website years ago, but it seems that the link is broken now. Do you know their new website link or if they are signed to a record label now?

Thanks, Tim

I'll just call Rhys and find out

Q: whats up with the website?
A: the website is gone, but there should be a new one soon, maybe a month or two.

Q: he also wants to know if your signed to a record label now?
A: HAHAHAHA no,
Q: anything else to add?
A: no? we haven't even finished recording the 15 track thing we've been working on for the last few months... so if we were looking for a lable we'd probably want ot finish that first.... should be out in a few months.

hey my names grant im 16. i bloody love ska but i can never find any ska gigs in around perth (especially AA gigs) but i been talking with the people at castlerock and kinda become mates with a few of the people who put shows on there and they said that they would be willing to put ska bands on. what are the bestbands in perth to go to. I loved 8 items or less but they have broken now so bit of a dead end there. two for flinching is the only band ive told them to get in contact with. are any of those bands like behind the 8 ball, bankrupt or waste of space still together??

cheers for the help

grant

the bankrupt broke up in 2001, shortly after we played the one and only show we ever did.
behind the 8 ball are also long gone.
waste of space are still around, but their drummer is recovering from a massive back injury, so you might see them start bobbing up in the gig guide soon.
two for flinching are still around, i think they're training up a new drummer at the moment? maybe? i saw Hayley their singer tonight, i should have asked them.

there are a couple of bands you didn't mention, the Rent Spenders (who sound a bit like waste of space mixed with the slackers)
and also Special Brew, who play 2tone covers and originals.

the chances of seeing any of those two bands at a venue which allows under age entry is pretty much zero,
the unfortunate situation is that ska isn't very popular amoungst the youth at the moment, they're all into feelings and emo and what-they-call-hardcore and crap like that, so there isn't much demand for ska, hence nobody bills ska bands.
there are a few regular 18+ venues.

Monday:
Rudeboy Invasion or Dub&Ska @ Hyde Park Hotel (bands and djs)

Wednesday:
Reggae @ Clancy's subi (i think this is still on)

Thursday:
Special Brew @ The Elephant and Wheelbarrow
Ska @ the Hula Bula Bar (so i'm told)

Friday:
Special Brew @ Clancy's Freo

Sunday:
there's a reggae night in freo i'm pretty sure.

so what's news?
Well there are two big news events.

The Rent Spenders, perths latest ska band, fronted by the one and only magnus. Featuring an all-star line-up. you'll be able to catch the band playing ever second Monday at the Hyde park hotel.

Speaking of which, we've got a huge following going for the Hyde park Mondays, every Monday night is ska at the hyde park. AND for the next 3 weeks in a row you'll be able to catch me doing my thing there.

In other huge news, 8 Items or Less have called it a day, the members have all promised me that they will form new bands, so hopefully with any luck they'll be on the scene shortly.

Special Brew have just returned from a trip down south and have a brand new website! www.specialbrew.biz

In international news, we've got the Special Beat touring australia this month!
The Specials and The Beat two bands that changed the face of music forever in the mid 70s have teamed up and are set to tour Australia for the first time this August. Playing under the moniker of The Special Beat and fronted by The Special's Neville Staples and The Beat's "Ranking" Roger Charley, the band includes members of The Specials and The English Beat, who will be making their first appearance in Australia on a select few dates.
I'll be seeing them on the 17th in Melbroune.

In other good news, Symarip have reformed, and will be playing their first show in 35 years at the Ska Club in London, I won't be flying over, but I wish I could.

In sad news, Laurel Aitken died a couple of weeks ago. He suffered a heart attack at age 78. He performed his last show just months before his death, rude till death!

I'll eventually get around to updating the interface for the website, when that happens i'll update more frequently.

SKA.MEETUP.COM/3 IS DEAD!
So welcome home rudies!

Saturday, 21 May, 2005

Well its time to get this site back up and going... i'm looking into getting a new domain and maybe a rebuild of westska (yes I know i've been saying that i'll do it for years)

on to news!

Probably the most shocking thing i've heard for quite some time is that Matt Freeman (bass for Rancid) has been diagnosed with cancer. I hear its lung cancer. I'm sure all our hopes are with him and hopefully he'll recover to rejoin one of the best punk bands of our time.

Special Brew are playing the Fremantle Clancy's fish pub on the first friday of every month. Also there are apparently a few demo's floating around with some of their original tracks on them. For some reason I haven't got one yet.

Monday nights at the Hyde Park Hotel are now weekly, but to mix it up a bit, we have the Dub & Ska party happening every fortnight, and a new night called Rudeboy Invasion, which will focus more on 2tone and modern ska sounds, and will also feature different live acts every week. These acts will ususally be freeform jam sessions between ska and reggae artists around perth. So there will always be something new and exciting to come down and watch.

Rudeboy Invasion has its 4th night this coming Monday, so I hope to see you all there!

We're all going down to the Subiaco Clancy's fish pub every Wednesday for Raggabeats and the general. so if you're looking for a mid-week ska fix come down for a pint!
