Ska kids Behind the 8 Ball have a keen sense for melody and energetic rhythms. Although one of the younger bands to be playing gigs in the remote city of Perth, Western Australia, the boys’ aim for a fresh, groove filled sound has seen them excel beyond there own expectations and inspired them to push further. Punk, jazz, reggae and hip-hop intertwined in their ska musical base has been enthralling audiences since their inception to Perth’s pub stages in mid 2001.

Formed in July 1999 while attending Como high school, Behind the 8 Ball spent plenty of time refining their sound and technique at high school parties before hitting the stage. Millencollin, Reel Big Fish, Less than Jake, Sublime and Long Beach Dub All-Stars have been a few of the bands to influence and shape much of the bands sound. However, a strong awareness and influence from classic groups ranging from Madness and The Specials to Black Sabbath, The Clash, Jimi Hendrix and more has been, perhaps, the key to their infectious ska/punk sound.

A debut demo recorded in early 2001 was well received with airplay and good publicity on local stations RTR and Fremantle radio. In August 2001 Behind the 8 Ball took out all categories at the South Perth Churches young band contest. This was followed up in March 2002 with a hard-earned second place in the Newport hotels Gerico band competition.

The boys have played many gigs in a relatively short period playing a variety of Perth venues from The Hyde Park Hotel and Grosvenor to the Brass Monkey and Nedlands Park Hotel. The more notable gigs for Behind the 8 ball have been the 2002 Como high school ball at the Hyatt, support slots on both of Waste of Spaces cd launch shows and even the Christmas show at Banksia Hill Juvenile Detention Centre

Recently Behind the 8 Ball have finished recording on what will be their first release proving their skill and maturity by recording, mixing and generally producing the majority of it themselves. This release will be on shelves shortly. Until that point, and beyond, Behind the 8 Ball will be out there having an enormous amount of fun while they show case their very own punk-ska sound.
