Two For Flinching are currently the self-acclaimed babies of the punk-ska scene, forming in the mere month of March 2004. Not only did they stumble upon eachother by some freaky hand of fate, courtesy the Cert III Music Industry Course at Leederville TAFE, but the inaugaral jam session at Lounge Guitars was initially supposed to be for a songwriting assignment! As unrock and roll as that may be, the goresome foursome have progressed at warp speed from Gene's loungeroom floor with accoustic guitars, to borrowing gear from Yuppie Scum and upthrusting Headquarters with their debut performance in late June.

Despite endless unamusing comparisons to the early No Doubt, Two For Flinching are a band not so easily pegged to a label. This may be partly due to having a drummer that likes world music (jazz, latino, tribal) as well a bit of metal and punk, a bassist that likes drum & bass, trip-hop, lounge music and the Buena Vista Social Club, a guitarist that likes punk rock and ska and a singer that likes old school political punk and reggae...But don't let the clashing diversities confuse you! The Flinch have definately got their sound cemented, and like to refer to this beautiful union of influences as 'Upthrust Nardcore' - music for motivation that makes you think, but also makes you want to crank some skanking at the same time. With intentionally random song structures, plenty of upstrokes and reggae/jazz-type riffs accompanied by the occasional ultra-fast or acrobatic vocals of Hayley "I'm-not-the-token-chick-singer" Willson, these guys definately like a challenge.

But whilst the music is incontestably compelled to violate your mind and have you converted from whatever crap you were previously into, let's not forget the crossfire of political lyrics met by upthrusting music - that is if you can hear the lyrics over the percussion powerhouse that is Mikey (the Monkey) Dean-Smith.

Although undoubtedly still at their raw, early stages, Two For Flinching have some thundering aspirations in their sights. Starting with their best foot forward as winners of the TAFE Battle of the Bands in May, as well as their first heat of the Campus Bands Comp (further heats yet to be played), they are building up quite a repertoire as well as a reputation. But that's up to you to decide whether or not it's going to be a favourable or forsaking reputation! You can catch them in their monthly residence at the Whitesands, or just keep a keen ear to the word on the street (a.k.a the punk forum on perthbands.com or Xpress!). So don't let me continue with my biased rantings, go and check them out for yourself. You'd have to be some kind of a massive idiot not to.
